120x60x60 cm Enclosure is the Best Size for following Australian Reptiles
The Bearded Dragon (Pogona vitticeps) is one of the most popular pet reptiles due to its docile nature, easy care requirements, and unique, charming appearance. Native to the arid regions of Australia, Bearded Dragons are known for their “beard” — a flap of skin under their chin that can puff out, often in response to stress or during interactions with other Bearded Dragons. These reptiles are active, inquisitive, and often enjoy climbing, basking, and exploring their environment. Bearded Dragons are omnivorous, requiring a balanced diet of both plant matter and insects. They thrive in an environment with a proper temperature gradient, humidity, and access to UVB light to ensure they stay healthy. A 120 cm x 60 cm x 60 cm (L x W x H) enclosure is an ideal size for housing an adult Bearded Dragon. Here’s why:- Optimal Space for Movement and Exploration: Bearded Dragons are active reptiles that enjoy exploring their surroundings. A 120x60x60 cm enclosure provides enough floor space for your Bearded Dragon to move around freely, bask, and explore without feeling cramped. This space allows them to establish their own areas for basking, hiding, and foraging.
- Temperature and Basking Zones: Bearded Dragons require a temperature gradient in their enclosure, with a basking area heated to around 38-42°C (100-107°F) and a cooler side with temperatures ranging from 22-26°C (72-79°F). The 120x60x60 cm size ensures that you can easily create these distinct temperature zones without crowding the animal or its heating elements.
- Room for Climbing and Enrichment: These reptiles are natural climbers and enjoy having various surfaces to explore. The height of a 60 cm enclosure allows you to incorporate climbing structures, such as rocks, branches, or logs, to enrich your Bearded Dragon’s environment. This vertical space provides opportunities for both mental stimulation and physical exercise.
- Sufficient Space for UVB Light and Heating Setup: Bearded Dragons need access to UVB light for proper calcium absorption and overall health. A larger enclosure like 120x60x60 cm allows for the safe placement of UVB lights and heat lamps, ensuring your pet can bask under the UVB light and get the benefits without overcrowding.
- Better Air Circulation and Humidity Control: Proper air circulation is crucial to maintaining the right humidity levels. A 120x60x60 cm enclosure offers enough space for proper ventilation and temperature control while preventing excessive humidity buildup, which is especially important for Bearded Dragons, who prefer dry environments.
- Ideal for Multiple Bearded Dragons (if appropriate): While it’s often recommended to house Bearded Dragons individually due to territorial behaviors, a 120x60x60 cm enclosure could accommodate two smaller Bearded Dragons or young ones, given ample space and proper monitoring. However, it’s important to always ensure that the reptiles are compatible and that there are no signs of aggression.
120x60x60 Enclosure can be used for following Australian Pythons.
- Carpet Python (Morelia spilota)
- Subspecies: There are several subspecies of Carpet Pythons, including the Jungle Carpet Python, Coastal Carpet Python, and Irian Jaya Carpet Python.
- Size: Adults typically range from 1.5 to 2.5 meters (5 to 8 feet) in length, though some larger individuals can grow up to 3 meters (10 feet).
- Temperament: Carpet pythons are relatively docile but can be more active and curious than other pythons, which may make them more challenging to handle at times. However, they are not typically aggressive.
- Care Requirements: They need a spacious enclosure with a temperature gradient, UVB lighting, and plenty of hiding spots. Their diet consists mainly of small mammals or birds.
- Ball Python (Python regius)
- Native Range: While Ball Pythons are actually native to Africa, they are commonly kept in Australia as pets and are widely available. They’re often included in lists of popular pet pythons worldwide.
- Size: Ball pythons typically reach around 1.2 to 1.5 meters (4 to 5 feet) in length.
- Temperament: Known for their docile and calm nature, Ball Pythons are often referred to as one of the best snake species for beginners.
- Care Requirements: Ball Pythons require a warm environment (around 30°C/86°F on the hot side), a cooler side (around 25°C/77°F), and access to a humid hide during shedding. They feed mainly on rodents.
- Western Carpet Python (Morelia spilota imbricata)
- Size: Typically grows to around 1.5 to 2 meters (5 to 6.5 feet) in length.
- Temperament: These pythons are known for being calm but can be a bit more defensive than some other Carpet Pythons. With regular handling, they can become very tolerant of human interaction.
- Care Requirements: They need a temperature gradient, with access to a basking area, and will require UVB lighting for optimal health. Their diet also consists mainly of rodents.
- Jungle Carpet Python (Morelia spilota cheynei)
- Size: Typically grows to around 1.8 to 2.5 meters (6 to 8 feet).
- Temperament: They are a more “spicy” species compared to other pythons but can become more tolerant with regular handling. They are known for their striking, beautiful patterns, making them highly sought after.
- Care Requirements: Like other Carpet Pythons, they require a spacious enclosure, UVB lighting, and appropriate heat sources. They do best with a variety of hides to feel secure.
- Children’s Python (Antaresia childreni)
- Size: One of the smaller pythons, growing to a maximum of about 1.2 meters (4 feet).
- Temperament: Children’s pythons are known for their docile nature, and they are often recommended for beginners due to their manageable size and relatively calm demeanor.
- Care Requirements: They are relatively low-maintenance, requiring a warm, dry environment and a diet of small rodents. They also benefit from a temperature gradient in their enclosure.
- Stimson’s Python (Antaresia stimsoni)
- Size: Another small python, growing to a maximum length of about 1 meter (3 feet).
- Temperament: Known for being calm and easy to handle, Stimson’s pythons are great for beginners and experienced keepers alike.
- Care Requirements: They are very similar to Children’s Pythons in terms of care, preferring a warm, dry environment with plenty of hiding spots. Their diet consists of small rodents or reptiles.
- Black-headed Python (Aspidites melanocephalus)
- Size: Typically around 1.5 meters (5 feet) in length.
- Temperament: Known for their striking black head and docile nature, these pythons are generally calm and easy to handle.
- Care Requirements: Black-headed pythons need a spacious enclosure with a proper temperature gradient. They also prefer dry conditions and a varied diet that may include small mammals, birds, or reptiles.
- Heating & Lighting Recommendations: We do not recommend using small ceramic heat emitters or UVA+UVB light bulbs, as they can be unsafe for your reptile. These can overheat easily, posing a risk of injury. Safer alternatives include radiant heat panels, basking bulbs, heat projector bulbs, or spot basking bulbs. Our enclosures are well-insulated, so you’ll need a lower wattage bulb than you would use in a glass tank. We also recommend inspecting your enclosure, heating, and lighting sources weekly to ensure everything is functioning properly. If you choose to use ceramic heat lamps and UVA+UVB bulbs, always use protective mesh and ensure the wattage does not exceed 25 watts.
- Avoid Stacking: Do not stack objects on top of your enclosure, as they are not designed to be used as shelves or tables.
- Cleaning: Clean your enclosure with a mild reptile-safe soap and lukewarm water, using a soft cloth. Always rinse thoroughly with clean water. Be sure to rinse the cloth or sponge frequently and change the cleaning water often. Avoid using razor blades, scrapers, squeegees, or brushes, as they may damage the enclosure.
- Safe Terrarium Setup:
- Choose decorations like rocks and plants with smooth surfaces to avoid injury. Sharp edges can easily cut or scrape your reptile.
- Protective Mesh: Always use protective mesh around heat lamps and light bulbs to prevent burns and injuries to your pet.
- Preventing Escapes:
