- Electrical Safety
- ✅ Avoid extension cords or power strips near enclosures unless rated for high wattage and properly ventilated.
- ✅ Inspect cords and plugs and lamp holders regularly for wear, fraying, or heat damage.
- ✅ We recommend using only “ceramic heat lamps” no shorter than 10 cm and with a maximum output of 75 watts. Higher wattage bulbs or oversized lamps can generate excessive heat, increasing the risk of fixture failure or detachment. Improper installation may lead to falling lamps, which can cause burns, enclosure damage, or even fire.
- ✅ Use surge protectors to prevent electrical fires during power surges.
- Proper Placement of Heat Sources
- 🔥 Secure heating elements: Ensure that all heat lamps and emitters are firmly attached and cannot fall into the enclosure.
- 🔥 Use ceramic or metal fixtures: Avoid plastic domes for bulbs — they can melt or ignite.
- 🔥 Use bulb cages/guards to prevent contact with PVC or flammable materials.
- 🔥 Maintain safe distances between heating devices and the enclosure walls or decor.
- Ventilation and Heat Regulation
- 🌡️ Install proper ventilation in the enclosure to prevent heat buildup.
- 🌡️ Monitor temperature regularly using digital thermometers with probes at different levels in the enclosure.
- 🌡️ Avoid placing enclosures in direct sunlight which could lead to overheating.
- Material and Layout
- 🚫 Keep flammable materials like paper towels, wood shavings, and curtains away from heat sources.
- 🧯 Use fire-resistant substrate if possible (e.g., tile, reptile carpet, or stone).
- ✅ Ensure the enclosure is elevated slightly off the floor to avoid overheating on surfaces.
- Fire Detection and Suppression
- 🔔 Install smoke detectors in the room housing your enclosures — not inside, but close enough to detect a fire early.
- 🧯 Keep a Class ABC fire extinguisher nearby and learn how to use it.
- ❌ Do NOT use water on electrical fires — always use the correct extinguisher.
- Emergency Planning
- 🚪 Have a clear evacuation route for pets in case of fire.
- 🧾 Keep a record of your animals and emergency contact info near the enclosures.
- 🔌 Consider using smart plugs or Wi-Fi thermostats that alert you to overheating or failure while you’re away.
